About Each Grade Level Group

Take Your Math Understanding to the Next Level, One Step at a Time

Typically, students would enroll in their current grade level class. For example, a 3rd grade student would enroll in our 3rd grade instructional tutoring math class, as would a 4th grader enroll in a 4th grade class, and so on. However, depending on your child's specific needs, parents may elect to enroll their student in a grade below (for students that have significant grade level gaps in math), or enroll in a grade above their current grade (for students exceeding their current grade level standards). While we leave that choice to parents, we may use diagnostic assessments or class data to recommend your child to a different grade level, at My Math Maven. As our goal is to grow your child to mastery. Each small group class is designed to help students accelerate their math conceptual understanding, improve their math skills, become strategic problem solvers, reduce testing anxiety, boost test scores, and simply enjoy learning math at a reasonable pace. We instruct students in math using a deep dive approach, implementing the the five process standards (problem-solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representation), as discussed in on page 4 of this NCTM article found here. Our curriculum utilizes the common core math standards.

3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Groups

Build a Solid Foundation

Solidify the foundational math skills that your child will need to master their grade level standards and prepare them to be success in middle school math, including Algebra I. Our math mavens will strengthen your child's math abilities including, multiplication, long division, solving multistep word problems, computation of fractions, geometric skills, all while making relevant connections to real world situations.

Each of these grade level groups may have up to 8 students that supports us attending to your child's individualized math needs. Each student must also take a diagnostic test, prior to starting their first class (fall-winter-spring only). This will help us target instruction that meets your child's specific math needs, in addition to the grade level core content instruction provided by our highly qualified math teachers. Note: Summer Math Academy classes may include up to 10 students for these grade levels, and diagnostics is embedded into the first class lesson.

6th and 7th Grade Groups

Reach Higher

In these vital grades, we build upon prior knowledge and extend into more complex math concepts. In 6th grade we focus on ratios and proportional relationships, expressions and equations, the number system, geometry, and statistics and probability, and of course those complex word problems. Math articulation both verbally and written. Students who can explain and demonstrate their math thinking excel more in the subject area, and maintain lifelong math conceptual understanding.

In 7th grade we extend our foundational 6th grade standards and strategies,  as we focus on expanding the understanding of and applying proportional relationships, working with expressions and linear equations, increasing understanding of operations with rational numbers, understanding and solving problems involving scale drawings and geometric constructions, and making inferences about populations based on data samples.

 Algebra I Groups (8th or 9th graders)

Exceed Your Expectations

The core standards for Algebra I build on those foundational algebraic concepts introduced in 6th and 7th grade, like working with expressions, equations, and inequalities. Our Algebra I class includes a powerful deep dive into understanding functions, specifically linear, exponential, and quadratic functions. We have the very best instructors that support students with developing skills in modeling with mathematics and solving problems using algebraic strategies and methods.
